wallpaperOS

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication

wallpaperOS brings generative art to your screen with handcrafted animated wallpapers for iOS and macOS. Each one is built on a different mathematical or artistic foundation - from flowing polar curves to procedural forests, Mondrian-inspired compositions to Ishihara dot patterns. Every wallpaper is deeply customizable. Available on the App Store.

  • Unique animated wallpapers rendered at 60 FPS on iOS and macOS
  • Ambient sounds with seamless looping - rain, train, birds, and more
  • Multiple color themes per wallpaper with dark mode support and adaptive color rendering
  • Customizable digital clock overlay with drag-to-position, multiple fonts, sizes, and formats
  • Immersive full-screen mode with auto-refresh for endless generative variety
  • Fully offline with no accounts, no analytics, and no data collection

Finding the right problem

wallpaperOS started as a creative outlet, not a product. I wanted to explore generative art and needed a reason to learn the math behind it. The wallpaper format gave the project a clear container - something visual, self-contained, and worth looking at every day.

  • The idea came from wanting something alive on my screen between meetings and on the subway - not distracting, just present
  • Mies van der Rohe's "less is more" and Steve Jobs' "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" shaped the entire design philosophy
  • Existing wallpaper apps felt bloated with social features, ads, and video loops that drained battery for no reason
  • Generative art projects showed what was possible with pure math - I wanted to bring that to a native app experience

I did not set out to build a product. I set out to learn something, and the app gave it shape.

Building and shipping

I targeted iOS 26 exclusively because the Liquid Glass and latest SwiftUI Canvas APIs were essential to the vision. Backward compatibility would have meant compromising the rendering.

  • Each gallery uses its own generative algorithm - trigonometric waves, vector fields, fractal recursion, and procedural grids
  • Getting the math right was the hardest part - a flow field that looks organic instead of random comes down to tweaking one variable at a time until it clicks
  • Glass effects and the latest SwiftUI APIs made iOS 26 the minimum - the visual quality would not have been possible on older versions
  • The clock overlay supports drag repositioning, multiple fonts, and format options so the wallpaper doubles as a functional lock screen
  • Everything stays on-device with no backend, no sync, and no accounts

Each gallery shipped rooted in a different mathematical concept.

Learning and iterating

The generative algorithms were the biggest challenge. Making them look good on a phone screen meant understanding every parameter. Not just copying code, but learning why sine waves layer the way they do and how fractal branching produces natural-looking trees.

  • Early prototypes exposed every parameter - amplitude, frequency, speed, color count - and it felt like a science experiment, not a wallpaper app. Stripping it back to a few presets was the right call
  • The galleries draw from art history - Mondrian's grids, Molnar's geometric abstractions, and flow field algorithms
  • The clock overlay started as an afterthought but became one of the most-used features during testing
  • Building something creative taught me differently than building a utility - there is no conversion metric for "does this feel right when you glance at your phone"

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
